ACO Wuestner and Officer Kempke removed a skunk from 41 Long Pond Road South, Ledyard, on July 30. The skunk was acting abnormally and we had been up there three times trying to locate it. The skunk was in an area with many stray and feral cats and we were not sure of their vaccination history so we euthanized the skunk and brought it up on Sunday to the state rabies lab for testing.
The lab called back today (Aug 1) with a positive result. Ledge Light Health will be posting notices with information on what to do. If you live in that area and your animals are outdoor/indoor make sure their vaccinations are up-to-date. If they come home with a wound and you don't know where it came from, please contact Ledyard Animal Control. If their rabies vaccine is up-to-date we will take your information and then ask you to call your vet for further treatment.
The law states that ALL CATS and DOGS MUST be up-to-date on their vaccinations for rabies! Rabies is a deadly virus that once symptoms become noticable it is too late to vaccinate!

Wildlife that are normally nocturnal can be out during daylight hours but if you have a skunk or raccoon or even stray cats up there at the pond that are walking in circles, walking and falling, lethargic, trying to get into your home, or acting aggressive and unafraid of you please call Ledyard Animal Control 860-464-9621 during business hours, or please call 860-464-6400 the Ledyard Police after hours.
If the animal has had no known contact it will be euthanized and the resident will be responsible to wear gloves, use a shovel and double bag the dead animal and place it in their garbage according to Ledge Light Health. If there has been contact with humans or animals the animal will be euthanized and an animal control officer will be there to take the information. The animal will then be brought to the state for testing. We usually receive an answer in 24 hours.

Please DO NOT leave food out for cats; you are most likely feeding wildlife and encouraging it to stay close to your home. Thank-you
