Calf Safe After Ledyard Barn Fire

An ice-covered dirt road caused a delay in reaching the fire but it was extinguished successfully.

At 9:05 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, the Ledyard and Gales Ferry Fire Companies were dispatched to 67 Thomas Rd. in Ledyard, for the report of a barn fire.

This section of town is served by a dirt road which was ice covered causing a delay in reaching the scene. Fortunately, with assistance from the homeowner and firefighters who arrived on foot, the fire was extinguished with limited damage to the structure.

Most of the fire was contained to the hay in a stable used for a calf. The calf was removed from the barn by the homeowner when the fire was discovered.

Tankers from the Town of Preston fire departments responded as a precaution and were returned when the fire was extinguished.
