Celebrate National Taco Day with Margaritas’s Macho Taco
The Mystic restaurant will be surprising several local businesses with trays of tacos today, but do you have the guts to make and eat this two-pound taco at home?
Whether you prefer a hard or soft shell taco with chicken, beef, seafood or vegetable filling, National Taco Day is your chance to gorge yourself on the traditional Mexican dish.
According to Punchbowl.com, the October 4, food holiday celebrates the history of the taco which dates back to 1520. The first record of the taco comes from a letter written to King Charles V of Spain by explorer Heranado Cortez in which, Cortez described a meal the Aztecs had made.

Margaritas Mexican Restaurant in Mystic is celebrating National Taco Day with a two-pound, 12-inch Macho Taco that comes stuffed with lettuce, beans, Mexican rice, seasoned chicken, ground beef, pork carnitas, bacon, salsa fresca, cheese and jalapeños, and is topped with crema, picante and hacienda sauces,
“The taco is a staple of the Mexican dining experience,” company President Hugo Marin said. “We offer several unique and delicious variations such as our Carne Asada Tacos and Tacos del Mar. What better way to celebrate National Taco Day than with the Macho Taco? It expresses our dedication to great tasting food, value and fun.”

If you think you can handle the Macho Taco it will be available at Margaritas from Oct. 4 to Oct. 8, 2012, and the restaurant will also be dropping off trays of the tacos to five local businesses on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Here’s What You’ll Need
- 1 12” tortilla
- 10 FL OZ lettuce
- 4 FL OZ rice
- 4 FL OZ refitos
- 4 FL OZ cheese mix
- 3 FL OZ taco beef
- 3 FL OZ line chicken
- 3 FL OZ carnitas
- 2 FL OZ salsa fresca
- 2 slices bacon
- 1 FL OZ hacienda sauce
- 1 FL OZ picante sauce
- 1 FL OZ crema
- 1 FL OZ jalapenos
Here’s What To Do
Place Macho Taco Shell on a clean Extra Large Oval and begin to build your taco in this order: lettuce (make sure lettuce is not wet and mound towards the center), refritos, and rice. Place the meat in three piles: Center pile of beef, end pile chicken, end pile Carnitas) taco beef, line chicken, carnitas. Then add 3 FL OZ cheese mix, salsa fresca, bacon (cut each strip in two and lay on top), hacienda sauce, picante sauce, crema, jalapenos, and 1 FL OZ cheese mix on top.
