Recommendations on How to Save
In addition to providing financial assistance programs, Eversource (formerly known as CL&P) has tips on how to use appliances, electronics, refrigerators and freezers and lighting in a way that will help keep your home comfortable while saving money and energy all year long.
- Did you know that as much as 8 percent of your electric bill may be due to power electronic devices you believed were off? Many home electronics such as computers, cable TV boxes, and televisions continue using power even when they are turned off. Plug these electronics into power strips and turn the strips off when the equipment is not in use.
- A full freezer/refrigerator actually uses less electricity. If necessary, stock the empty space with filled plastic water bottles.
- Well thought out plantings can cut your summer cooling and winter heating costs dramatically. For summer shading, plant trees on the south and west sides of your home. Prune off lower branches as the trees get taller, so the lower winter sun can shine under and help warm the house. Also, don’t use evergreens. They also shade the house all winter.
- An easy way to manage energy costs and save money year round is to turn your water heater down to 120 degrees. If you have children in your home, this is also an important safety measure.
Insulation Services
