Five Things to Know Today

- Ever wonder how schools superintendents know if the weather warrants closing school? Gales Ferry weatherman Terry Henkel is part of that equation.
- Guiding Eyes for the Blind puppy class takes place today from 9-11 a.m. at the Ledyard Congregational Church. The organization is always looking for volunteers, both to raise puppies and to fill in as sitters. You can learn more about Guiding Eyes for the Blind by clicking here.
- At the Board of Education office tonight there will be a special meeting of the Finance Committee for the purpose of discussion and possible action of the district's proposed $29.5 million budget for 2011-2012. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.
- If finance committee meetings aren't your thing, you might like Jewelry Night at Gales Ferry Library, from 6-8 p.m. On the second Tuesday of each month, friends gather at the library for some jewelry-making fun. Find out what you've been missing.
- On Wednesday the Ledyard Patch will launch some new features designed to be of interest to moms, including a live Moms Chat, which will begin at 1 p.m. The topic will be how to control spending on groceries, clothing and other household necessities. Watch tomorrow for details.
