Hikers Get Lost on Lantern Hill

Large Search and Rescue Effort Locates Hikers in 90 Minutes

Two local hikers stayed too long in the woods of Lantern Hill Monday and needed to be rescued by Ledyard and State Police, and emergency personnel from Ledyard and North Stonington.

The hikers, an adult and a minor, called 911 at 6:46 p.m. Monday, commencing a search and rescue effort that involved the Ledyard and Gales Ferry Fire Departments, the North Stonington Fire Department, the Mashantucket Pequot Fire Department and the Ledyard and North Stonington Ambulance Associations.

Although most trails on Lantern Hill are well marked, darkness descends quickly the day after Christmas and the hikers, whose names were not available, could not find their way out of the woods in the dark, police said.
