Ledyard Resident Warns Others of Disappearing Cats

He said a large brown or gray fox was seen in his driveway.

Glen Myers‎ posted the following on Ledyard Animal Control’s Facebook page:

Can you post for widest distribution? Last night, there was a large brown or gray fox in my drive way (209 Haley Road, Ledyard). There have been several cats (including our D.C.) that have disappeared. He and his friends (can’t imagine there is just one) could be the culprits.

His post prompted others to share their stories. Have you seen foxes or other wildlife around town? Tell us where in the comments.

Stephanie Gagnon: I live on the Groton side of Haley Rd. and both the number of foxes and coyotes in the area is astronomical. Every night we see them in our yard or running down the road. Keep those small animals inside!

  • Toni Esposito Johnson: There are fox everywhere, and Fischer cats and coyotes. A good reminder to do your best to keep your pets inside and supervised outside. Cats are so vulnerable.
  • Valery Kobasa: Be aware that we have seen both fox and coyotes during the day, so cats are vulnerable all the time. We live off Pumpkin Hill.
  • Lauren Jennifer: My cat spent a couple nights in a high tree, after being chased up by a predator. Luckily I have a barn, that they won’t go into because there’s people smell in there. However, they got two of my hens, which prompted a coop reinforcement. Fox and coyote are very clever, so just bring in your animals before sundown.
  • Lauren Jennifer: That’s no fox. That’s a coyote. Fox tend to be reddish. Smaller, and scavenge.
  • Glen Myers: I am familiar with both foxes and coyotes. The color description was from a poorly lighted night sighting and he/she was back-lit from my garage security light. In that lighting condition, best color was grey. Probably was red if it had been daylight or front-lit. Definitely fox, though, not coyote.
