Man Tires To Consume Evidence While In Custody: Ledyard PD

Police said a Ledyard man attempted to consume a controlled substance while being processed by police.

LEDYARD, CT — Police said a Ledyard man allegedly attempted to consume a controlled substance while being processed by police on Friday. Police said a remand into custody order was issued after the accused violated his parole.

According to a news release, police said they located Matthew R. Branch, 30, and discovered he was in possession of over an ounce of marijuana and a controlled substance. The accused was arrested and transported to the Ledyard Police Department for processing.

"While being processed, the accused grabbed the packaged evidence, opened the evidence packaging and attempted to consume the controlled substance," police said in a release. "The accused resisted the attempts made to prevent him from consuming the controlled substance."

Police said the accused was transported to the Backus Hospital for treatment and later released back to police custody. He was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, interfering with an officer and destruction of evidence.
