No Charges Filed In Alleged Racial Slur Incident: Ledyard PD

Police said that following an investigation the State's Attorney's Office determined there was "insufficient probable cause."

LEDYARD, CT — Police said that following an investigation of an alleged racist slur used at a basketball game in February the State's Attorney's Office determined there was "insufficient probable cause."

Police said they were dispatched at 7:39 p.m. Feb. 5 for a reported disturbance at Ledyard High School.

"It was reported that after the girls’ varsity basketball game ended, parents from Ledyard and parents from Colchester were arguing and some parties were refusing to leave the gym," police wrote in a statement.

Police arrived and ensured that all attendees were able to leave the school safely.

Police learned that either during or after the game, someone allegedly used a racial slur. Officers confirmed that this report was made to Ledyard High School’s athletic director.

Police then opened an investigation, conducting "many interviews, re-interviews and review(ing) much video footage from several sources." Police also worked closely with Ledyard High School administrators.

Police then began working with the State’s Attorney’s Office in New London.

"After additional interviews and more video review, the State’s Attorney’s (SA) Office reviewed the entirety of the case, including an arrest warrant affidavit," police wrote. "Ultimately, the SA determined that there was insufficient probable cause in this case."
