Norwich Man Charged With Hate Crime In Church Burglary, Vandalism: PD

Ledyard police said Madison Barrett, 33, broke into a Gales Ferry church and vandalized, and defaced church property with painted profanity.

LEDYARD, CT — A Norwich man was charged with vandalizing and painting "profanity" inside Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry last month, police said.

Charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief and intimidation based on bigotry and bias, Madison Barrett, 33, turned himself into police Tuesday, according to Ledyard Police Capt. Ken Creutz.

Arrested on a warrant, it alleges that on March 11 at 1 a.m., Barrett "forced entry" into the church and proceeded to vandalize and deface church property with painted profanity, Creutz said.

The Ledyard Police Department received investigative assistance from the FBI New Haven
office and the Connecticut State Police Biased Crimes Unit and received valuable information
called in from citizens.

Scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court, Barrett was held on a $30,000 court-set bond, Creutz said.
