Outdoor Seating Now at Montville Sweet Frog
Outdoor tables and chairs are now available for customers enjoying delicious frozen yogurt.
Green and pink umbrellas adorn black tables with green chairs in front of Montville’s Sweet Frog frozen yogurt shop. Two black benches sit outside the windows of the shop.
Two tables with six chairs were setup on July 17, says owner Tammy LaPenta, who plans to have as many as five or six tables with at least 12 seats.
“The outdoor seating is a huge hit so far,” LaPenta said while peering out Sweet Frog’s windows at the folks enjoying their frozen yogurt on a warm early summer afternoon.
It’s the only eatery in the Montville Commons Shopping Center and one of the few in town to offer customers the ability to enjoy their food while enjoying the beautiful weather.
The outdoor seating compliments the indoor seating consisting of 40 seats along with a small kid’s table with chairs and a chalkboard.
While the place is “kid-friendly”, LaPenda said it is also a “place where people can socialize, that’s roomy, and where people don’t feel rushed.”
Increased Business
When asked about how well the shop is doing, she said that “business is picking up” both because it’s summer and due to word-of-mouth recognition as existing customers are telling their friends and families. Some customers, LaPenta said, come back on a weekly basis.
Part of that recognition comes from the fact that Sweet Frog’s mascots, Cookie and Scoop, are making appearances around the shopping center, town parades, and town ballfields.
The shop has had five kids birthday parties and participated in ten fundraisers. Some of those fundraisers include Zumba-thon, Tyl Middle School Choir’s trip to Carneige Hall, CHR Foster Care for foster care awareness, Leo’s Club - a group of Montville high school and middle school students providing community service to the community, M.H.S. National Honors Society who is helping the local VFW with money towards flags for headstones, flowers/condolence letters for funerals, parades, and other projects, Montville High School Girls Basketball trip to Disney World for a tournament, for the Holland Family whose parents died leaving three children, and for 5-year-old Ava London who underwent treatment for brain cancer.
Current Flavors
The most popular flavors this time of year are cake batter, raspberry, vanilla, chocolate, graham cracker and watermelon, LaPenta explained.
While flavors change seasonally, flavors that stay include vanilla, chocolate, strawberry or raspberry, cake batter, cookies and creme, peanut butter, and original tart.
LaPenta is proud that Sweet Frog has many gluten-free options and that all flavors are either no fat or low fat.
“I find a lot of people like our two non-dairy sorbet options and we swap out those flavors regularly,” LaPenta explained.
Additionally, the shop always has two no sugar added options.
As for Sweet Frog’s current flavors, folks can enjoy watermelon sorbet and non-fat gluten-free cotton candy, at one machine. A second machine features non-fat and gluten-free graham cracker and non-fat toasted marshmallow. A third machine has no sugar added and non-fat strawberry banana and non-fat Georgia peach. A fourth machine has original tart and cherry tart while a fifth machine has low-fat cake batter and non-fat cookies and creme. A sixth machine features non-fat raspberry and no sugar added cheesecake while a seventh machine has low-fat white vanilla and pink lemonade sorbet. An eighth machine has low-fat gluten-free Dutch chocolate and peanut butter.
There are over 50 toppings and nine sauces that can be added to a delicious cup of frozen yogurt.
Customers can make their own combinations in one of two size cups.
Each machine has a twist option where both flavors are mixed together but customers can additionally make their own combinations.
For example, s’mores can be made by getting the graham cracker and marshmallow twist and adding it to chocolate.
All flavors are 53 cents an ounce and the weight of the cup is subtracted from the price at the register.
