Police Blotter: Dog Blamed in Collision

Man Blocks Snow Plow; Hit-and-Run at Ledyard High School

On Jan. 31, Zachary Gavitt, 25, of 320 Pendleton Hill Road, North Stonington, was found passed out at the wheel in the Two Trees Inn parking lot. He was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and ordered to appear in New London Superior Court on Feb. 14.

On Jan. 30, Christian Oates, 43, or 39 Pearl Street, Mystic, stopped his GMC truck on Lantern Hill Road to avoid hitting a dog, which was walking along the center line of the road. Jair Guevara-Soto, 19, of 6 Powderhorn Lane, Ledyard, driving a 2001 VW Jetta, crested the top of a hill and struck the rear of Oates' truck, causing damage to both vehicles. Police determined that the dog was to blame for the collision. The dog's owner was issued a summons for allowing the dog to roam at large.

On Jan. 29, at 12:45 p.m., police said a car was struck in the Ledyard High School parking lot while the owner was inside, causing damage to the car. The driver of the offending vehicle apparently left the scene without leaving a note. Laura Arzamarski, 28, of 511 Norwich-New London Turnpike, told police she parked her 2002 Mazda Protege at the school at around 9:40 a.m. and went inside to participate in a study group.  When she returned to her car, she found the right rear had been damage and no note had been left. Anyone with information is asked to call the Ledyard Police Department at 860 464-6400.
