Suspect Crashes Into Pole During Chase: Ledyard PD

Ledyard police said a suspect was injured after crashing into a utility pole while allegedly evading police.

LEDYARD, CT — Ledyard police said a suspect was injured after crashing into a utility pole while allegedly evading police Sunday night. The incident occurred after an officer observed a suspicious vehicle in the business district of Gales Ferry around 9:44 p.m., police said.

Police said the officer also noticed the vehicle had an equipment violation and attempted to stop the car. The suspect initially seemed as though he was going to stop, but then sped off northbound on Route 12 at a high rate of speed, according to a release.

Police said the officer pursued the car into Norwich, where the suspect crashed into a utility pole just south
of the viaduct. Officers were assisted by Norwich police at the crash scene, police said.

Police said the driver, identified as Derrick R. Helme, 38, of Norwich, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital. Police are currently investigating the situation and charges are pending, police said.
