VIDEO: Hiking Lantern Hill

Impressive Vistas and Trails for Hikers of All Levels

My daughter was home from school on Columbus Day weekend, and she and her brother and a couple of their friends decided to hike up Lantern Hill. I tagged along to chronicle the outing (you can hear me trudging behind them, huffing and puffing through most of the video).

We entered by Wintechog Hill Road, and where the paths diverged we stayed to the right, walking along the hill’s steep west-facing side. Lantern Hill provides a nice range of trails for hikers of all levels, everything from a leisurely walk in the woods to actual rock climbing. If you have young people in your group you might end up doing more ambitious climbing than you expected. One of our party, for example, scaled a sheer outcropping and we did not see him again until the very end of the climb.

You will want to wear better hiking shoes than some of the members of our group, and bring a bottle of water, especially if the weather is as warm as it was on Monday.

But on a clear day, the vistas from the top – whichever path brings you there – are well worth the effort.
