LEDYARD, CT — A large fill-and-redevelopment application in Gales Ferry goes to the Inland Wetlands commission this week. The Finance Committee takes up higher bulky waste fees and opioid settlement spending, and residents are invited to walk Route 12 to point out pedestrian safety problems.

1. Wetlands Panel Receives Gales Ferry Intermodal Fill Application
When: Tuesday, Oct. 6, 7 p.m.
Where: Council Chambers, Town Hall Annex, 741 Colonel Ledyard Highway, and on Zoom
What to know: The Inland Wetland and Water Courses Commission will formally receive an application from Gales Ferry Intermodal LLC for regulated activities at 1761 Route 12 in Gales Ferry, according to the agenda. The application covers the use of reclaimed materials under Connecticut's Large-Scale Beneficial Filling Pilot Program for industrial redevelopment on the southern and northern portions of the site, along with related site work. The application packet includes a stormwater management report and a site operations work plan. The agenda lists a decision deadline of Dec. 9. 2. Finance Committee Weighs Bulky Waste Fee Increase, Opioid Funds
When: Wednesday, Oct. 7, 5 p.m.
Where: Council Chambers, Town Hall Annex, 741 Colonel Ledyard Highway, and on Zoom
What to know: The Town Council's Finance Committee will consider a motion to increase bulky waste disposal rates to $55 for a small pickup-size load, $200 for a medium load and $400 for a large load. Shingles would cost $120, $500 and $1,000 for the same load sizes. Members will also discuss possible uses for the town's National Opioid Settlement payments. They'll consider a strategy to limit the increase in the 2027-28 mill rate, given the possibility that the state won't repeat extra funding from this year's budget and that motor vehicle and other revenues may fall. The agenda also includes a resolution on using transfer fee revenue for transfer station improvements and the budget letter of directive for 2027-28. 3. Residents Invited To Walk Route 12 In Gales Ferry
When: Thursday, Oct. 8, 2:30 p.m.
Where: Ocean State Job Lot parking lot, 1666 Route 12, Gales Ferry
What to know: The town's Sustainable CT Ad Hoc Committee is holding its second public walk audit in the Gales Ferry Route 12 area. Participants will look at pedestrian safety and accessibility and identify barriers to walking and other alternative transportation. Residents, business owners and others are welcome. Bring water and comfortable walking shoes. People who can't attend can fill out an online questionnaire linked from the town's flyer. 4. Absentee Ballots Now Available For Nov. 3 Election
When: Available now
Where: Town Clerk's Office, Town Hall, 741 Colonel Ledyard Highway
What to know: The Town Clerk's Office began accepting absentee ballot requests Oct. 2 for the Tuesday, Nov. 3, election. Voters can apply online through the Secretary of the State's portal, or on paper using the state application, which is also available at the clerk's office. Completed ballots and applications can be mailed to the town clerk, left in the secure drop box outside Town Hall or delivered in person during office hours. Ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The town's notice also includes a street-by-street lookup for voting districts and polling places.

5. Town Proposes Selling Shewville Road Parcel For Farming
When: Written comments accepted now; public hearing Wednesday, Oct. 14, 6:15 p.m.
Where: Council Chambers, Town Hall Annex, 741 Colonel Ledyard Highway, and on Zoom
What to know: The Town Council will hold a public hearing on selling about 11.46 acres of town-owned land at 480R Shewville Road, formerly the Loftus Wellfield, to a Noank resident for $150,000 for agricultural farming, according to a legal notice. As conditions of the sale, the property's restriction to water utility use would be removed at the buyer's expense, and the buyer would place a permanent deed restriction limiting it to farming. The sales agreement, survey map and deed are posted with the notice, and written comments are being accepted. A vote on the sale is set for a special town meeting Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
