Managing Your Retirement
Q #21: “Retirement is about more than finances. Besides money, what else should I think about when I plan or start my retirement?”
Author Nancy Schlossberg, age 84, recently interviewed 150 retirees and incorporated their wisdom in her book, Revitalizing Retirement: Reshaping Your Identity, Relationships and Purpose. Nancy recommends that retirees examine three areas of life to prepare mentally for retirement: identity, purpose, and relationships.
Consider how you want to identify yourself and think about yourself when you retire. Will you be the handyman, the hospice volunteer, the local travel expert or someone else? What will your passion be? What will you get you excited about getting up every morning? You may have several passions. You may base one or more of them on things you’d wished you done in your life but only now have the time to do. And think about relationships. Most of us lose a lot of relationships when we retire from the work world. Develop new ones. Find places where people who share your interests tend to hang out and go join them. That might be a health club, an art organization, a political group, or something else.
As I said earlier, retirement can be the most rewarding time of life. You may have more time and resources to do what you want to do than you’ve ever had before. I hope so. Enjoy!
The best way to learn the truth about successful retirements is to talk to successful retirees. Write down the names of three or four retirees you know who see their own retirement as a wonderful time of life. Contact each of them and ask them for advice. What plans worked for them? What do they wish they had done differently?
