MADISON, CT — After a 2.1 million gallon spill of raw sewage into the Mill River and Long Island Sound from New Haven's wastewater treatment plant shuttered beaches in several area towns, local health department officials said late Thursday that after testing, it's safe to head to the Madison beaches, and they've reopened.

"I am happy to inform you that the Madison town beaches and shellfish beds are now open," First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons said.

"The Madison Health Department has received official notice from the (state) Department of Public Health that the samples collected yesterday are within permissible limits and do not exceed the standards for swimming water quality established by DEEP."
