MADISON, CT — Madison police are warning residents about a license suspension scam that has hit residents' cell phones in town and throughout the state.
"Several residents have reported receiving text messages claiming their driver’s license will be suspended unless they immediately pay a fee," police officials wrote on Facebook, adding that one of the department's officers recently received one of the texts.
"These messages are fraudulent. They are designed to create panic and pressure people into sending money or clicking suspicious links. Please do not respond, do not click any links, and do not provide any personal or financial information."
The Facebook post (see below) is accompanied by screenshots of the scam texts. Police departments do not send out such texts; in the event of an issue with a license, a letter will be sent to a home address.
"If you receive one of these messages, delete it and report it as spam," officials said. "If you are unsure whether a message is legitimate, contact the appropriate agency directly using an official phone number or website."
