Madison HVAC Committee Approves $11,976 Credit, Reviews Progress at Polson School Project

MADISON, CT — Madison's School Building HVAC Project Committee approved a nearly $12,000 project credit and more than $1.4 million in construction-related invoices during its Tuesday meeting, while receiving an update on ongoing HVAC, electrical and facility improvements at Polson Middle School.

The committee, meeting virtually, unanimously approved ATP-0010, a credit of $11,976 related to a change in gym weight room construction. The modification replaced planned lead paint chemical stripping with bolted connections, eliminating the need for the stripping work. Emily Rosenthal made the motion, seconded by Galen Cawley. The motion passed unanimously, 2-0.

Project officials reported that the Polson HVAC, electrical, auditorium and gym improvement project remains on its original schedule and under its original Guaranteed Maximum Price.

Ben Whittaker, the town’s director of construction and planning, said installation and wiring of the main electrical equipment in the new electrical room has been completed, with the exception of the automatic transfer switch, which is expected to arrive this week. Work also continues on electrical feeders, rooftop conduit, generator connections and duct bank construction.

In the gymnasium, demolition of the bleachers has been completed and wiring for the new bleachers has been installed. Gym exhaust fans have been removed, roof patching is finished, and demolition of six existing heating air handling units is underway, with four units removed so far. New gym lighting installation is nearly complete, pending ductwork installation in several areas.

Whittaker said installation of the variable refrigerant flow HVAC system is continuing on a second shift and remains on schedule. Approximately 90 percent of indoor cassette units have been installed, with piping and electrical work ongoing. Penthouse equipment has been delivered and is scheduled for installation beginning June 22.

Auditorium renovation work is also scheduled to begin June 22.

Whittaker reported that the project’s new generator is expected to arrive in October. Installation is tentatively planned for Election Day to minimize site traffic impacts.

The committee also unanimously approved four invoices totaling approximately $1.45 million. The approved payments included:

• $21,740 to BL Companies for construction administration services.
• $1,416,659.90 to Gilbane Building Company for construction work through May 28.
• $4,200 to Anderson Surveying LLC for Eversource easement mapping.
• $3,000 to William B. Meyer Inc. for moving weight room equipment to Daniel Hand High School.

No public comments were received during Tuesday's meeting.
