Madison Faces Strong Winds, Coastal Flooding Through Sunday

Town officials warn of wind gusts up to 65 mph and possible major coastal flooding as a nor'easter affects the shoreline through Sunday.

MADISON, CT — A wind advisory is in effect and a coastal flood warning will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and continue through 6 p.m. Sunday as a nor'easter threatens Madison with strong winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding.

Updated forecasts indicate an increased risk of impacts from the storm, with wind gusts of up to 65 mph possible. Combined with heavy rainfall, saturated soil and the duration of the storm, the winds could cause significant damage to trees and power lines, according to the town.

The most significant coastal impacts are expected from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon. Multiple tide cycles and prolonged wave action are expected to affect the shoreline, and major coastal flooding is possible.

Residents should continue to monitor weather conditions as the storm develops. Town officials said they are monitoring the storm and will provide updates as additional information becomes available.

Ahead of the storm, residents are advised to secure outdoor equipment, signs, loose materials and other items that could be affected by strong winds. Residents should also keep drainage areas and systems clear and move valuable equipment, documents and other materials away from areas prone to flooding.

Residents with generators and backup power systems should check them before the storm and fuel vehicles and generators where appropriate. Devices, including portable chargers and power banks, should be fully charged, and residents should check flashlights and prepare for possible power outages.

Generators should always be operated outdoors and away from windows and doors. Downed wires should be treated as live and dangerous and should not be approached or touched.

Drivers should not go around barricades or attempt to drive through flooded roads because floodwaters can be deeper than they appear.

The town is also encouraging Madison residents and business owners to sign up for Everbridge, its mass communications system, to receive town alerts and updates.
