Madison Halloween Events Include History Hikes And Trunk-Or-Treat

Two history hikes and Trunk-or-Treat are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31, following Friday's farmers market.

Madison's Halloween lineup includes two history hikes and Trunk-or-Treat on Saturday, Oct. 31, according to the Town of Madison. The Madison Police Department and Madison Chamber of Commerce will host Trunk-or-Treat from 4 to 6 p.m. on the Green, with live music, decorated trunks and treats.

Madison Land Trust's first hike begins at 9 a.m. at the end of Martleshamheath Road in Rockland. Participants will follow the path Mary Stannard took before her death, according to the land trust. Joel Helander, author of "Noose and Collar," will discuss the case at the trail's start. Dogs are prohibited on the Regional Water Authority property used for this hike.

The second hike starts at 11 a.m. at the Shepherds Trail trailhead in Madison. Eric Alletzhauswer and Ben Diebold will lead participants to the site of Eldridge Johnson's murder, where remains of his cooking hearth still stand. The land trust describes both walks as relatively easy, each lasting about 90 minutes.

Registration is requested for the Halloween hikes. Email events@madisonlandtrust.org and indicate in the subject line which hike or hikes you plan to join.

Before Halloween, the Madison Farmers' Market will be open Friday afternoon, Oct. 30, on the Historic Town Green, according to the town. Vendors offer Connecticut-grown and locally produced foods, with weekly offerings available on the market website. First Congregational Church's donation tent accepts market purchases, nonperishable food, cash and extra garden produce for its community food initiative.
