Born During The Pandemic, 'Food Hut' Continues To Feed The Hungry

The nonperishable foods cupboard, established by downtown Madison business Walker Loden, was a blessing during the pandemic, and still is.

MADISON, CT — It's always open. It's always free. And it's completely anonymous. People may take what they need, and those that are able, donate what they can.

A five-shelf cupboard, dubbed the Food Hut, it's a pantry for those whose cupboards are lacking. Created near the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 by the owner of Walker Loden in downtown Madison, it was a way to give back. And during the pandemic, helped many.

In a Facebook post from employee Carol Brennan, it's noted that as the Food Hut nears its second anniversary, there have been "so many positive outcomes."

" Many of our neighbors are using food from our hut. We have thank you notes posted on the door. We notice different people donating which means word is spreading. One person is donating hygiene products monthly, which are popular. Another person brought food into Walker Loden in memory of a friend who used the hut and had since passed. This person is honoring her friend’s memory," she wrote.

"There are many stories I’m sure and we are just so glad that so many have chosen to support our Food Hut! Because of you, we are able to provide non-perishable food 24/7 anonymously to those in need."
