Costume in Detail: Discover How Clothes Tell the Stories of Madison’s Women

Join the Madison Historical Society on Wednesday, August 13, 2026, at 6 pm at The Allis Bushnell House for a special presentation, Costume in Detail: Discover How Clothes Tell the Stories of Madison’s Women, presented by Clare Barnett.
Drawing from the Madison Historical Society’s remarkable costume collection, this program will explore the stories of several Madison women whose lives are preserved through the garments and accessories they once owned. Through careful examination of fabrics, construction techniques, alterations, wear patterns, and historical documentation, attendees will discover how clothing can reveal insights into family life, social status, education, work, travel, and community involvement.
Featured objects include dresses worn by prominent Madison residents. Visitors will see a pair of wedding shoes belonging to former Madison High School principal Mary Frances Hull and a mourning bonnet owned by Mary Scranton Evarts, the first librarian of Madison’s E.C. Scranton Memorial Library. The presentation will also highlight the life of physician and surgeon Isadora Murray, whose elegant dress survives as a rare artifact of her extraordinary career and personal story.

This fun and engaging program is perfect for kids who love to perform, want to improve social skills, build confidence, or overcome shyness.Through exciting games, imaginative play, and creative storytelling, participants will learn the basics of acting and performing while having fun in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Throughout the week, our little stars will develop self-expression, teamwork, and stage presence while having a blast! Whether your child is a natural performer or just looking to come out of their shell, this program is a wonderful way to help them grow, learn, and shine!
The Mad Barn mini workshop session 1: 7/6 - 7/10 session 2: 8/17 - 8/21 Both run from 3:30 - 5:30 pm and feature a special free performance for friends and family on the Friday of each week so little stars can show off what they worked on. Performers are welcome to either or both weeks!

The 44th Annual WICC Surfside Hotel <a href="https://www.bluefishtournament.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Greatest Bluefish Tournament on Earth</a> returns to Long Island Sound on Saturday, August 29, with fishing officially beginning at 12:01 a.m. Anglers from Connecticut and New York will compete for bragging rights—and a $25,000 grand prize awarded to the tournament's largest bluefish.
The weekend-long tournament features more than $40,000 in total cash prizes, including:

 <li>1st Place: $25,000</li>
 <li>2nd Place: $7,500</li>
 <li>3rd Place: $2,500</li>
 <li>Smaller cash prizes awarded through 20th Place</li>
 <li>Port Prizes awarded for the heaviest bluefish weighed at each official Connecticut and New York weigh station (see below for complete list of weigh stations)</li>
</ul>
Young anglers, 17 and under, will also have the chance to win big. The tournament will award a $1,000 cash prize to the largest bluefish caught by a youth angler. Second and third place youth winners will receive $100 gift cards.
