Coronavirus In CT: Pharmacists Can Make, Sell Hand Sanitizer

One of Gov. Lamont's executive orders allows licensed pharmacists to make and sell hand sanitizer under strict guidelines approved Sunday.

HARTFORD, CT — Saturday the governor ordered that licensed pharmacists can begin making hand sanitizer. Why this is a big deal is in part that sanitizers are made from alcohol.

Now we know how that will work.

Per the Department of Consumer Protection, first, the pharmacist must use a formula from a reputable source that creates a product that is greater than 60 percent alcohol as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The pharmacist must follow all federal and state labeling requirements. Before selling any product, the pharmacist must get contact information for the person buying the sanitizer "sufficient to permit the pharmacist to initiate
a recall if necessary." And, the contact info on the and the lot number of the sanitizer must be recorded on a log sheet.

All records must be given to the state consumer protection department and those records will be kept for three years.

It's not clear when hand sanitizer will begin being made and sold by licensed pharmacists but given the order was just implemented Sunday, Patch has made requests of officials for more information and this post will be updated when we hear back.
