District Adds 3-Hour Weather-Related Delay Option

Adding an hour gives 'public works and sun a little more time to clear the roads and can help salvage a school day, says superintendent.

MADISON, CT — Schools superintendent Thomas Scarice says including a three hour delay school start time will allow town road crews, and the 'sun,' to do the work of clearing roadways for school buses.

And, he says, it means the district can "salvage" a school day.

In a post to Facebook, Scarice said, "With a few months of winter left to go, I wanted to share with the community a new delayed start option the district is adding to its repertoire: a three-hour delay."

He explained: "In the event of bad weather, the district currently has a two-hour delay option or school is canceled. However, the option to add an extra hour to the delay, giving public works and the sun a little more time to clear the roads, could help us salvage a day. The school day still counts with a three-hour delay and each school would operate on a truncated schedule.

"While all delays or cancellations are made on a district-by-district basis, I have spoken with other superintendents in our region and multiple districts are currently considering adding this three-hour delay option. With three cancellations already this December, my peers and I acknowledge that one or two of those days could have been saved with this three-hour delay option.

"As always, when school is delayed the district will send a notification through our app, an eNotify message and post a message on our district and individual school homepages."
