E.C. Scranton Memorial Library Referendum Results

Almost 19 percent of Madison's registered voters cast their ballot on Tuesday. See below for the full results.

MADISON, CT – Voters agreed overwhelmingly Tuesday at a referendum to spend $9 million to renovate the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library.

The vote was 1,897 in support of the library project, while 550 people voted no, according to the town. The voter turnout was about 19 percent, officials said.

"The Library Board and I are so grateful to the voters of Madison who overwhelmingly supported this project. We are glad they agreed with the value and importance of renovating and expanding our library. This will truly enable us to build brighter futures for all of our residents and I can't wait to get started," said Library Director Beth Crowley.

The approval means the library would more than double in size, from its current 17,000 square feet to 37,000 square feet. Additionally, 45-space parking lots would be built.

The library expansion plan is a decade in the making. Way back in 2008, voters rejected a plan to expand the library. This plan is a scaled-down version of the plan that was rejected nine years ago.

The overall cost of the project is close to $15 million – but $6 million of the cost will be offset by grants and fundraising efforts undertaken by library officials.
