Final Madison School Changes Public Hearing Scheduled

School officials are considering eight possible options and want the public's feedback. No major changes are expected for a few years.

It’s no secret some major changes may be on the horizon for the Madison Public Schools, but not for at least a few years.

There are eight potential options school officials are considering and they want your feedback on what makes the most sense. School officials are looking to potentially consolidate facilities, which includes the possibility of closing a school, but again that is at least a few years away.

The final public workshop will be held 7 p.m. Monday, June 8 at Daniel Hand High School.

You’ll have an opportunity to address the Long-Term Facilities Committee and offer your feedback on the eight options.

“This public workshop is not intended to finalize a particular recommendation, but to provide community input for the Board of Education as it deliberates and ultimately decides on a long-range plan for our school facilities,” Madison school officials said in an email Friday.

The “family of options” consists of changing the three elementary schools from their current K-4 grade levels to the typical K-5 grade levels, installing a middle school that accepts students grades 6-8 and leaving the high school as is, grades 9-12, the New Haven Register has previously reported.

This would reduce the district by one school and will reportedly allow for fewer transitions for students as they move up in grade levels.

Another option includes demolishing all three of the town’s elementary schools, building a new middle school for grades 6-8 and adjusting Polson to accommodate grades Pre-K through second grade, according to the article. The estimated cost for this project is between $25 million and $35 million, the Register has said.
