Garden Club of Madison Plants Veterans' Memorial Garden with Brownie Troop 63259

Brownie Troop 63259 Plants Veterans' Memorial Garden~Garden Club Madison Education Chair, Julie Elting and Garden Chair, Carolyn Bernard

The Garden Club of Madison educates and introduces children to an appreciation of nature and gardening. Each year Brownies plant annuals at the Veterans' Memorial Garden with the assistance of the Education Chair, Julie Elting and Chair of the Veterans' Memorial Garden, Carolyn Bernard.

This year, Brownies from Troop 63259 were introduced to "waking up the garden".

Spring is the time to prepare the garden beds for new plants, prune flowering shrubs after the bloom, till and amend the soil to increase nutrients available to the plants and clear away wind blown debris and leaves.

The Brownies did just that!

Carolyn introduced the girls to Chickity Doo Doo, an organic fertilizer that gets the biological organisms really kicking! She explained, it was dried chicken poop. The girls just squealed and pee-yewed over the idea. To their surprise, Chickity Doo Doo doesn't smell!

After raking and digging large enough holes for their red geraniums, white salvia and blue lobelia, they added a bit of Chickity Doo Doo and water and gently covered the roots of the flowers. The mulch will be added by the town.

The Veterans' Memorial Garden is ready for the Memorial Day parade and celebration; remembering and honoring those who died in active military service.

Many thanks to the girls from Troop 63259, the leaders and parents, and the Garden Club of Madison for your dedication to aid in the protection and conservation of natural resources and to plan and participate in civic beautification projects.
