MAD For Trees Native Tree Give-Away Saturday At Bauer Park

MAD for Trees, which hopes to plant 200 native trees for Madison's 200th anniversary, has Sugar Maples, Red Oaks, Dogwoods, and Pitch Pines.

MADISON, CT — At Bauer Park Saturday, from 10 to noon, MAD For Trees will be giving away around 80 native trees to residents who sign its tree care pledge.

The rain date is Sunday.

The trees, Red Oaks, Sugar Maples, Dogwoods, and Pitch Pines, come in two to seven gallon containers.

The Sugar Maple and the Red Oak are deciduous shade trees that grow to 75' and both provide colorful autumn foliage.

The Flowering Dogwood is an understory tree that grows to about 30-feet and its autumn foliage colors can be a striking red or reddish-purple color.

The evergreen Pitch Pine is a hardy tree that will thrive where other native trees will not: in poor, sandy soil.

Mission

MAD for Trees was formed to raise support for the planting of 200 native trees for the town's 200th anniversary of its incorporation in May 2026.

By planting these trees, it hopes to:

  • Raise awareness of the Climate Crisis and its impact on Madison.
  • Create a positive civic campaign celebrating the Town's history.
  • Provide collaborative projects for residents, businesses & local organizations to come together to sustainably beautify the town.
  • Encourage a future of environmental stewardship in Madison.

Goals

Near Term — Plant 200 Trees in honor of 200 Years

  • Be an integral part of the Town’s Bicentennial
  • Support Sustainable CT Silver certification
  • Provide Youth based educational opportunities
  • Create beautification projects around town

Long Term

Plant 2,000 Trees “for eternity”

  • Create a Tree Commission
  • Provide proper tree care & oversight
  • Create “Three for One” tree replacement Planning & Zoning guidance for tree removals
