Madison Businesses May Benefit From No Fees At Hammonasset

Officials suggest signs be installed near state park directing beachgoers to nearby downtown Madison businesses.

MADISON, CT - The fact that beachgoers will no longer be charged a parking fee to come to Hammonasset State Park should bring bigger crowds to Madison during summer months - and - officials believe that nearby Madison businesses could benefit from those crowds.

At the most recent Economic Development Commission meeting, Selectman Bruce Wilson noted that it is part of First Selectman Tom Banisch's agenda to enhance the grand list through economic development.

Under the new state budget, any vehicle with a State plate will then be allowed to enter any State park for no fee.

While there is a concern of this new process is that it could increase the number of people who come to Hammonasset State Park Wilson noted it could also be seen as an opportunity for economic development.

As more out-of-town people are drawn to Madison, steps could be taken to encourage them to visit Madison businesses to improve economic activity especially in the downtown area.

EDC Chairman Ryan Duques suggested the Town look to improve signage away from Hammonasset to direct people to the downtown area. It could be as general as “Madison Town Center 1.5 miles," Duques said.

There have been discussions about working with the Chamber of Commerce to improve signage but this has not yet been completed.

Town Planner Dave Anderson agreed to contact the Department of Transportation about how to proceed with putting up signage on Route 1.
