Construction crews and the Connecticut Water Company were downtown this morning making the connections to the state-of-the-art underground irrigation system in the center median. This required a trench to be dug across route one, allowing water and electrical lines to be placed to the new median. The system, which runs under the median as well as the new sidewalks will ensure that the new trees and plants are watered efficiently. If all goes according to plan, the trees along the sidewalks will be planted the week of June 20.

Additional construction, which is scheduled to be completed prior to June 30 includes the remaining brick installation on the south side of downtown, completion of the new crosswalk in front of the Post Office and installation of the light fixtures.

As phase one construction nears to an end, visitors are reminded that all business are open and accessible and there is ample parking available on main street and behind the south side of town (Stop and Shop), where both time restricted and unrestricted spaces can be found and there is parking on the north side of main street and behind the movie theater.

Phase two of the project, which includes reconstruction of the area along route one west of Henny Penny and Cumberland Farms to Route 79 is pending funding. Several grant requests have been made to fund the completion of the project.
