Madison Changes School Reconfiguration Plan: Report

The changes are a direct result of threatened major reductions in funding for Madison at the state level.

MADISON, CT — Because of threatened cuts in state aid for Madison, especially in the area of school funding the Board of Education is changing it up when it comes to planned upgrades to its school facilities.

The school board had approved a plan last October that would have led to the closing of Island Avenue Elementary School, renovating both Jeffrey and Ryerson elementary schools and some upgrades to Polson Middle School, the Madison Source reports.

But now the school board is looking to only rebuild Ryerson school in a five-school model and deal with the other facilities as part of a 10-year strategic plan, the Madison Source reports.

A referendum concerning rebuilding Ryerson could occur in November. An estimate for the work is $27-$30 million. It's unclear what state reimbursement Madison would receive for the project. The school board would then create a 10-year plan to identify other capital needs at the district's remaining schools.
