Madison First Selectman Candidate Steps Forward

Madison's current First Selectman Fillmore McPherson has said he won't seek reelection in the fall.

On Thursday, Madison First Selectman Fillmore McPherson announced that that three terms of office is enough for him and he wouldn’t be seeking reelection.

His potential successor could be Republican Town Chairman Tom Banisch, who is the first person to throw his hat into the ring. Democrats have not decided on a candidate as of yet.

Banisch has led local Republicans the past eight years, and he owns his own business, which serves the chemical industry, the New Haven Register reports. Banisch is also a realtor.

Banisch said he plans to continue the town’s strong financial record, work to attract new businesses to town, and help make Madison more of a destination for tourists because of Hammonasset State Park, restaurants and art galleries, the Register reports.

In an interview with the New Haven Register last week, McPherson said the job requires 24/7 attention and he wants to step back and enjoy life more. The position pays $79,000 annually.

“I’ve accomplished a lot of what I set out to do,” McPherson said via the Register. “Now, it’s time for someone else to take the job and make their own mark.”
