Madison Has Plan To Keep Kids Cool In School

Madison students head back to school Tuesday and the school chief has penned a back to school letter including some ways to beat the heat.

Written by Madison Schools Superintendent Thomas Scarice,

Good afternoon,

As we wrap up the last few hours of summer vacation, I want to take this opportunity to share with parents the excitement in our buildings last week as our entire team returned for the start of the new school year! We are ready to enthusiastically kick off the new school year!

A couple of notes for parents before tomorrow...

All bus stop information is posted on our district website. We ask for patience the first week of school as new riders and routes can delay pick up times. In addition, we have been informed by our Town Engineer that there may be some paving around town. However, we have been assured that they will accommodate our school buses.

As Mother Nature continues to remind us that the summer weather is stubbornly hanging around, we want to assure parents that our schools without air conditioning (all elementary schools and Polson) will have a plan in place to rotate children in and out of cooler locations in the buildings throughout the day, particularly during the afternoon. Additional notes for parents of elementary age children: We ask that parents please return the form that indicates dismissal plans for their child, including plans for early dismissals. This is very important information for your child's school to have at the beginning of the year. Some school districts dismissed their schools early last week due to excessive heat. We have done the same in the past when appropriate. Our hope is that this can be avoided this week, yet we would like to encourage parents to assist us in our preparation.

The Principals will work together to decide whether or not an afternoon outdoor recess is appropriate tomorrow given the heat forecast. I can assure you that our kids will have outdoor recess throughout the year, twice a day, unless the weather does not cooperate.

Again, our team is enthusiastically ready to begin the new school year tomorrow! We look forward to seeing your child and beginning the 2018-2019 school year.

Sincerely,
Thomas Scarice
Superintendent of Schools
