Madison Police Help Person To Safety During I-95 Overpass Incident

Officer uses crisis intervention training as responders temporarily close highway during the episode.

MADISON, CT — I-95 in Madison was temporarily shut down Sunday evening as Madison police and other emergency responders assisted a person who was reportedly outside the protective fencing of an overpass, according to authorities.

The Madison Police Department received a report at about 6:50 p.m. on Sept. 27 of the individual who was possibly outside the protective fencing of an overpass directly above I-95.

Officers responded and made contact with the individual, who police said "spoke about several difficulties she was experiencing."

"Due to the immediate safety concerns, Interstate 95 was temporarily shut down while officers worked to safely resolve the situation," Madison police officials wrote on Facebook.

Officer Avery LaChance remained with the individual for about 10 minutes, working to keep her calm and engaged, according to police. LaChance used de-escalation and communication techniques from her Crisis Intervention Team training during the response.

With assistance from the Madison Hose Fire Department, the individual was brought safely to the ground and connected with appropriate care, police said.

"We are grateful for the professionalism, patience, and compassion demonstrated by everyone involved, and we thank our partners at Connecticut State Police-Troop F Westbrook and the Madison Hose Co. No. 1 and Madison Emergency Medical Services for their assistance," officials wrote. "Incidents like this highlight the importance of crisis intervention training, teamwork, and a coordinated public safety response."
