Madison Police Warn Of Email Scam Targeting Land Use Applicants
Some residents who submitted land use applications in Madison have received fraudulent emails seeking $5,000 payments, according to police.
MADISON, CT — The Madison Police Department is warning residents about a fraudulent email scam targeting people who have submitted applications to the town's Land Use Department.
According to police, scammers are sending emails impersonating Town Planner Erin Mannix and requesting $5,000 wire transfers for application fees.
Police emphasized that the emails are fraudulent and that the payment requests do not come from the town.
The Madison Land Use Department does not request payments by wire transfer, police said.
Officials are urging residents to take precautions when receiving suspicious emails, including:
- Do not send money or provide financial information in response to suspicious emails.
- Verify payment requests directly with the town before making payments.
- Be cautious of emails appearing to come from town officials, as scammers can impersonate names and email addresses.
- Do not respond to suspicious payment requests.
Residents who receive one of the fraudulent emails should not respond or send payment. Instead, they should contact the Madison Land Use Department directly using an independently verified phone number.
Anyone who has already sent money or believes they have been a victim of the scam should contact the Madison Police Department at 203-245-6500.
Police are also encouraging residents to share the warning to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam.
