The methodology of the study included data from the 2012 FBI Crime in the U.S. Report(although the FBI recently released 2013 statistics). The raw data included violent crimes and property crimes from all law enforcement agencies that participate in the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program. To calculate the crime score, violent crime was weighted at 90 percent and property crime was weighted at 10 percent.
