Madison Resident Is Best in Show at Silvermine

The Silvermine School of Art offers courses for all ages and levels of ability from beginners to professional artists.

From Silvermine School of Art: Once a year, the Silvermine School of Art celebrates the vibrant work of its student body, which encompasses all ages and levels and covers a wide range of disciplines including Painting, Drawing, Ceramics, Sculpture, Printmaking, Jewelry, Photography, and Mixed Media. During the annual awards ceremony on Sunday, June 3, School of Art Director Anne Connell presented prizes to the student honorees, and students gathered with their families and friends for a reception and celebration of the work. Awards are given in three categories: Adult, Youth (ages 11-17) and Junior (ages 5- 10). The exhibition, which is installed in the Silvermine Galleries, runs through June 30th . This year’s juror, Catherine Vanaria, is Chair of the Department of Art and Associate Professor of Art at Western Connecticut State University. Vanaria chose first prizes and honorable mentions across all categories of work. Best in Show was awarded to Janine Robertson of Madison, Connecticut, for “Silver Drift,” her painting in oil on aluminum. Catherine Vanaria is a photographer, master darkroom technician, and educator. Her work is included in the Polaroid Collection, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame collection, as well as many private collections, and has been included in numerous group shows throughout the northeast United States including the Aldrich Museum (Ridgefield, CT). She graduated from Hartford Art School with a BFA in Photography, and Savannah College of Art and Design with an MA in Digital Photography and from Lesley University (Art Institute of Boston) with an MFA in Visual Arts (Photography).
