Madison Schools Hire a New Director of Special Education

The Board of Education, at their regular meeting on June 2, 2015, appointed Dr. Elizabeth M. Battaglia to the position of Director of Special Education for the Madison Public Schools effective July 1, 2015, said Thomas Scarice, who is Madison’s schools superintendent.

Dr. Battaglia will replace Cynthia Twiss who will be retiring after serving six years in the position with the district.

Dr. Battaglia has served as an Education Specialist for the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) for the past six years. She also serves as the Program Director of the regional STRIVE Program, a community-based transition program, for students in Madison, Clinton and Guilford. Dr. Battaglia has prior experience as a Special Education Teacher in both public and private school settings.

Dr. Battaglia received her undergraduate degree in English from Southern Connecticut State University, as well as, her Master’s Degree in Learning Disabilities and Sixth Year Diploma in Special Education. Her doctorate degree for Instructional Leadership was completed at Argosy University of Sarasota, Florida.

Scarice said that “Dr. Battaglia is a welcome new addition to the Madison Public Schools.”

Dr. Battaglia is looking forward to joining the district and she is eager to work with and learn from the administration, faculty, staff, students and families of Madison, according to a schools statement.
