Madison Train Station Project Receives State Funds

State and local officials say the money will improve safety for people using the train and hopefully boost the local economy.

Madison, CT - Senator Ted Kennedy, Jr. and Representative Noreen Kokoruda today announced that the town of Madison will receive state assistance to complete infrastructure improvements around the Madison Station, officials said in a news release.

Repairs and improvements will be made to pedestrian walkways in order to encourage rail ridership and access to businesses along the Boston Post Road.

Madison will receive $400,000 for repair and improvements to the Tuxis Walkway and pedestrian improvements to Bradley Road, in order to enhance pedestrian connectivity between the Madison Station area and the Boston Post Road.

The project will enhance the safety of pedestrians and encourage rail ridership, while providing pedestrian and bike access to businesses along the Boston Post Road, officials said in a statement.

“Access to rail transportation is a great asset to the town of Madison. It allows people to commute to work, and also helps attract visitors to the downtown area where they can stop by our great local restaurants and shops,” said Senator Kennedy in a prepared statement. “I fought to secure the approval of this grant, which will further enhance Madison Station’s impact on our local economy. Making it safer and easier to commute from the train station by foot or bike will bring more people to our town so that they can enjoy all it has to offer, including our many great small businesses. Encouraging transit-oriented development was a key recommendation made by businesses and stakeholders at the 12th District Economic Planning Summit, which I held earlier this year. I will continue working to promote projects just like this one throughout the region.”

“Better access to rail transportation will be a great asset for the Madison community,” said Representative Kokoruda in a statement. “These funds will connect the town’s transit station to the newly redeveloped downtown area, which will boost our local economy, rail ridership and jobs. I want to thank the governor and State of Connecticut for their support, and I’m looking forward to seeing this project brought to completion.”

“The proximity of Madison’s rail station to downtown is unique as it is a short walk to our center’s businesses, restaurants and downtown residential living. This grant will allow Madison to improve necessary infrastructure, increasing pedestrian access to and from the station while improving safety and aesthetics,” said Ryan Duques, Chairman of the Madison Economic Development Commission in a statement. “The funding of this grant request is proof that local and elected officials realize the importance of investing in our community’s infrastructure, which is a catalyst to continued vibrancy and economic growth.”
