Man's 'Twisted Story' Leads to Claim He Was Shot in Madison

The man, 19, said he was leaving Toad's Place in New Haven heard a gunshot, didn't remember being shot, and now says it happened in Madison.

On Sunday, Feb. 14, Connor Bush, 19, of Ledge Road in Old Saybrook was being transported to Yale–New Haven Hospital by ambulance, New Haven police spokesman David Hartman said.

He’d been shot in the pelvis. New Haven police were notified by staff at the Shorline Medical Center in Westbrook that Bush claimed he’d been shot earlier in New Haven, police said. They arranged his medical transportation.

Bush arrived and was met by officers. He told them that he’d been out with friends at Toad’s Place nightclub on York Street.

He said they’d parked some distance from the club. When they left to head home, Bush said they couldn’t find the car. He said they made several turns before using a locator app on a cell phone.

He said as they neared their ride, they encountered a group of three or four men, police said. They heard a gunshot. Bush said he and his companions ran to the car and took off, police said.

Bush claimed while riding to Old Saybrook, he realized he’d been shot, police said.

He said his friends drove him to Shorline Medical. Staff there summoned an ambulance and had the victim transported back to New Haven for treatment, police said. The bullet was lodged in his pelvis.

The officers weren’t able to gather much information, Hartman said. The victim said he didn’t know the area and therefore didn’t know where the shooting occurred, police said. The person or people responsible weren’t described.

In negative single digit temperatures, officers were sent to search for a crime scene. None was found. No other reports of gunfire were phoned in to 911, Hartman said.

Meanwhile, as detectives headed to the hospital to interview Bush, he was checking himself out, police said.

On Monday evening, the doubting detectives paid Connor Bush a visit. During their talk, Bush confessed he’d been shot accidentally while at a friend’s home in Madison, police said.

“We notified Madison Police of the twisted story. They are investigating,” Hartman said.
