As Of Monday, Masks Are 'Recommended' But Not Required In Schools

But, a universal mask mandate can be imposed if there is a local or state-wide need due to an outbreak.

MADISON, CT — Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Cooke reminded families beginning Monday, the district will transition to a “mask recommended” model for face coverings in school buildings.

Details of the new mask model, and updated health and safety guidance, can be found on the district website reopening plan spring addendum.

But Cooke also pointed out in a message to students and families that "there are a few important things to keep in mind."

  • Under the “mask recommended” model, the Department of Public Health (DPH) retains the authority to impose a universal mask mandate if there is a local or state-wide need due to an outbreak. Local school districts also maintain the ability to institute mask wearing due to local conditions.
  • For the five days following the quarantine or isolation period, individuals are recommended to continue to wear a well-fitting mask in all settings.
  • The CIAC has announced that masks will no longer be required at indoor or outdoor athletic practices and competitions. MPS will follow this guidance and not require masks for athletes. There is the potential that MPS athletic teams could compete at a facility/school with more stringent masking requirements. We would adhere to that requirement while competing. Please see the reopening addendum for further information and guidance related to this change.
  • Wearing masks on school buses is a federal order. Barring any action from the CDC or TSA, this order is expected to still be in place after Feb. 28 and students will be required to continue masking on the school bus.
    • masking on school buses applies to transportation to and from school as well as any extracurricular activities and field trips.

"As we adopt this new mask model, I would like to stress to parents the importance of communicating to your students the need to respect individual decisions regarding masking," Cooke wrote. "I would also ask that you have continued conversations with your student about your family’s expectations for mask wearing."
