New Walking/Biking Trail To Ryerson, Brown Schools Celebrated

The Madison Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee identified the location and need for the trail, and the Land Trust and town blazed it.

MADISON, CT — A Madison Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee-initiated effort to connect the "town, schools, and Madison Land Trust" with a walking and biking trail was blazed last summer.

The trail is located in the Lenore Drive area from Summer Hill Road to Ryerson and Brown schools, on property owned by the town and the Madison Land Trust.

The committee noted that both the Land Trust and the town were instrumental in clearing the trail.

As part of National Walk to School Day last October, students from Ryerson Elementary School celebrated the trail. They held an event to "bring the school community out to promote good health, school spirit, and safer routes for students to walk and bike to school."

In 2020, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee received an Honorable Mention in its first application to become a Bike Friendly Community.

The committee's Complete Streets Policy has been nationally recognized as one of the top five policies formally adopted in 2018. The original committee was an ad-hoc one until it was elevated to a permanent committee, also in 2020.

The committee "has made a lot of progress behind the scenes," it notes on the town's website.

"And we are still hard at work to improve bike infrastructure, provide bicycle safety education, encourage road safety, and encourage walk to school days," it reads.
