Obituary: Barbara Ann (Hayes) Juengst, 85, of Madison

She did a lot of volunteer work in Madison including 12 years of hearing screening students in Madison.

BARBARA ANN (HAYES) JUENGST, 85, of Madison, CT wife of James F. Juengst for 57 years, passed away Monday November 20, 2017 at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT. Born July 12, 1932 in Middletown, CT the only daughter of the late James Thomas Hayes and Elsa Frances Matilda Anderson who both died in Middletown, CT.

Her grandparents were Dennis John &Mary Ann (Connors) Hayes and Frank & Helma Augusta (Andersdotter) Andersson, all of whom died in Portland, CT except Dennis who died in Middletown, CT. Barbara lived in Middletown until 1943 then Portland CT until she graduated from Portland High School in 1950 3rd in her class. Afterward she went on to graduate as a registered nurse from Peter Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing in Boston, Massachusetts in 1953.

After graduating she went back to Portland, CT to live but worked as a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital. She met her husband James who was a patient at St. Francis Hospital in 1954. After 1955 she worked at the VA Hospital in West Haven until 1958 when she worked for Middlesex Memorial Hospital until 1960. Jim and Barb were married August 13, 1960 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Middletown, CT. After that she worked at several different convalescent homes in the Collinsville, CT area where she had her first house with her husband on Freedom Drive.

Around 1966 she started working at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT until her retirement in 1997 (31 years). The last couple of decades she had the RNc designation. She did a lot of volunteer work in Madison, CT where her family moved to their second house in 1966. The volunteer work included 12 years of hearing screening students in Madison, in charge of the Madison Bloodmobile for years, Madison Community Services (one of the founding members and a board member), ran the storm shelter in North Madison at the North Madison Congregational church during various types of storms and was the ABC nurse from 1975 to 2000.

She was an avid reader and quilter. She went on all her kids field trips and many girl scout campouts as the nurse. She also went on trips with the Portland High School band that her husband was helping to manage. She was born a Catholic and converted to Lutheranism after her retirement as a member of the Madison Lutheran Church. Regardless of being Catholic, she and her husband and friends helped to put on a bunch of fun dinners at the church in earlier years.

In later years she travelled a lot with her husband with timeshares and went abroad to China and Sweden. She especially liked Hawaii. When asked how she ended up with three daughters in the sciences, she replied, “We pushed the arts”. She donated to and went to musicals at Goodspeed Opera house since it reopened.

She was predeceased by her first cousin Pearle Adeline (Josephson) & her husband W. Arthur Peterson of Portland, CT, siblings-in-law Henry & Christa (Winkler) Juengst of Berlin, CT and Carl Eckblom of Manchester, CT. Surviving are: her daughters, (Tracy) Theresa Marie Juengst of Madison, CT; (Tina) Kristina Marie Sendall and her husband Maurice of Acworth, GA; and (Trish) Patricia Marie Magee and her husband Douglas of Guilford, CT; 4 grandchildren, Emma and Jack Magee; and Heather and Deborah Sendall; Brothers and sisters-in-law: William & Eleanor Astrid (Juengst) Blankenburg, Frederick William & Dorothy (Johnson) Juengst, and Linda Anne (Juengst) Eckblom and several nieces and nephews: Steven & Nota (Yannios) Juengst of Simsbury, Ralph & Melinda (Blankenburg) Dawley, Frederick & MaryKate (Nyman) Blankenburg, Scott & Irene (Wong) Blankenburg, Alex & Deborah (Juengst) Martinez, Derrick & Erica (Kennard) Juengst, Brian & Karen (Schweitzer) Eckblom, Gregory and Stacey (Redner) Eckblom, and James & Elizabeth (Eckblom) Ringuette.

Calling hours will be Monday, 5 – 7 pm, November 27 at Guilford Funeral Home 115 Church St, Guilford.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, 11 am, November 28 at the Madison Lutheran Church, 9 Bitton Ln, Madison, CT. Burial next to her parents will be Friday, December 1 at 1 pm at the Swedish Cemetery, her family was founding members of in the 1870s, found on William Street in Portland, CT.
