Obituary: Katherine B. Russell, 63, of Madison

She was the the volunteer Director of Madison Youth Lacrosse.

Katherine B. Russell, age 63, of Madison, CT passed away on June 10, 2016 surrounded by family and friends following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's.

All will miss Katy’s legacy of love, laughter, charity, friendship, family, and faith. Katy was born in Cincinnati, OH on Nov 21, 1952. She grew up in Devon, PA and lived there until she graduated with high honors from Ohio University’s College of Education.

It was at OU that Katy met Bob Russell and the two married in 1974. Bob and Katy initially lived in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and then in 1983 moved to Madison, CT, the beautiful seaside town that Katy so loved, to raise their boys Rob, Matt, Kevin, and several bulldogs. She taught at Devon Elementary School, Evergreen Elementary School, and The Country School during her many years in elementary education.

Katy’s three sons all showed a love for sports at a young age and participated in Madison youth sports, which eventually led to her leadership role as the volunteer Director of Madison Youth Lacrosse.

Katy famously coined the mantra “Have Fun, Play Lacrosse” that characterized her many happy hours on and off the lacrosse field and has permeated MYL ever since.

Other charitable work included the Ronald McDonald House of New Haven, Junior League of New Haven, and membership on the Board of Governors at Fairfield College Preparatory School.

Katy is survived by her loving husband Robert “Bob”, three sons, Robert “Rob” (Beth), Matthew “Matt”, and Kevin (Katie), two grandchildren, Claire and Robert “Mac” Russell. Katy’s family is awaiting the birth of her second granddaughter soon to join this world. Katy was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Dorothy and is survived by brothers Peter (Pam) and Jeff (Melanie), sister Judy Rinda, and 10 nieces and nephews.

Katy will be remembered for her infectious smile, warm demeanor, and unforgettable laugh. Katy loved all her amazing friends from Ohio University’s Alpha XI Delta Sorority, Madison, Pine Orchard Yacht & Country Club, Fairfield College Preparatory School, St. Lawrence University, The United States Naval Academy, and summers on Cape Cod.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 14h at St. Margaret’s in Madison, CT at 11:00 ET. In lieu of flowers and in the spirit of Katy's desire to give back, you may make a memorial donation in the name of Katherine B.
