Obituary: Mary Jenkins Knowlton, 88, of Madison

Knowlton was an avid golfer at the Madison Country Club and active in community activities.

Mary Jenkins Knowlton, of Madison, CT, passed away peacefully at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, FL on January 18, 2016.

Mary is predeceased by her brother, Donald Conway Jenkins (1976), her husband, Jerry Willis Knowlton (1996), and her son, Gerald Knowlton (2014).

She is survived by her children Katherine Esposito (Ellery) of Crestwood, KY, Peter Knowlton (Maureen) of Norfolk, MA, Nancy Casula (Justin) of Guilford, CT, her daughter-in-law Marcat Knowlton of Old Saybrook, CT, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

She also leaves her long-time friend and companion Ralph Crowell, of Chatham, MA, and countless other relatives and friends who loved her.

Mary was born in Winthrop, MA. She was the daughter of Alice McConnell and William Jenkins, President of Weston’s Bakeries, Inc., in Waltham, MA.

She prided herself on growing up in Newton, MA with her brother, Conway Jenkins. She attended Perry Kindergarten Normal School in Boston, MA and went on to become a teacher in CT, where she met her husband, Jerry.

Mary was an avid golfer at the Madison Country Club and active in community activities. She was a long time member of St. Margaret’s Church and a member of the church guild.

Mary loved the sun and the ocean. She enjoyed summer family vacations in Harwichport, MA and, in her later years, she spent winters in Pompano Beach, FL. She was a lifelong Red Sox fan. Mary enjoyed music, dancing, playing bridge, doing jigsaw puzzles, and socializing with friends.

Friends and family are invited to calling hours on Monday, February 8, 2016 from 4-7 pm, at the Swan Funeral home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Margaret’s Church, 24 Academy Street, Madison, CT, on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 10am.
