Polson Principal Reverses Stance, Allows Students to Dress Up for Halloween

Student leaders convinced the principal to allow students to dress up in costumes for Halloween.

The following is a message from Polson School Principal Frank J. Henderson, who is allowing students to dress up for Halloween for the first time since 2003. But it’s all for a good cause, read more below.

Halloween 2014

Dear Polson Parents,

Since 2003 (when Polson opened), we have not allowed our students to dress up for Halloween. I have felt strongly that costumes for the entire day are a distraction to the learning environment.

This year I was approached by a few of our Grade 8 student leaders who presented a proposal to allow students to dress up on Friday, October 31 if they pay $2.00. The proceeds will go to the Madison Food Pantry.

After a great deal of consideration I have decided to support this initiative. So on Friday, October 31 students can pay $2.00 (or more if your family would like to donate to this worthy cause) to dress in costume.

I will communicate the following to the students and I ask for your support as well:

No masks or accessories (shields, swords, etc.)
No violent or inappropriate themes (alcohol, tobacco, etc.)
Hats are acceptable and would constitute as a costume
School rules apply related to dress code and appropriateness of costumes
Please remember that this is completely voluntary for students. I support student and family decisions related to costumes. For those students who do not wish to wear costumes, spirited orange and black attire is welcome! As stated previously, I want to support our student leaders and their proposal to have some fun here at school and raise much needed funds for our local food pantry.

As always, do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Respectfully yours,

Frank J. Henderson

Principal
