Schools To Support Students After Capitol Breach: Superintendent
Craig Cooke says teachers will respect positions, be sensitive to signs of stress, and create respectful discourse if kids want to talk.

MADISON, CT —After the U. S. Capitol was breached, then stormed, by followers of Pres. Donald Trump Wednesday intent on stopping the Electoral College certification of Joe Biden as the next president, with members of Congress evacuated and one person shot and killed, Madison schools superintendent Dr. Craig Cooke sent a message to families.
Cooke said Madison's educators are prepared to support students as they process the day's events.
"Today’s unprecedented events at the Capitol present challenges for us all. This school year has been filled with unique situations that challenge our personal, professional, and civic responses. As parents, you are your child’s first teachers and I am sure are being faced with difficult questions at home tonight. I’m writing tonight to assure you that our schools will be ready for tomorrow.

We have shared resources with our teachers to ensure they are prepared for tomorrow to respect various positions, to show sensitivity toward signs of stress, and create a respectful discourse if, or when, students initiate discussion. Teachers will also receive support from school administration and teacher leaders to work with age appropriate responses to current events.
Consistent with this school year, there is no “playbook” for the best response in such an evolving situation. We are dedicated to do our professional best amid such a polarizing time.

As a school district, our first job is always to support our students. We will continue to do so as we navigate through difficult situations amidst a challenging school year. If you need any assistance, or have any questions, please feel free to contact the guidance department or your child’s principal.
As always, we appreciate your support.
Sincerely,
Craig A. Cooke, Ph.D.
