Steven Finkler + AT&T, Vice President on Work Place Productivity

Steven Finkler shares his professional opinion on productivity in the work place.

Work is generally a time achieve objectives and be productive. Unfortunately, there also happens to be a reservoir of distractions that can allow for wasting time. There are many goals that can ge achieved at work, which is the last place you want to slack off. A lot of wasting time has to do with poor communication habits with co-workers. Here are some ways that you can rectify those barriers and occupy your time more at work.

Keep It Simple

Sometimes we don’t realize it, but we make a lot of issues more complex than they have to be. This can lead to unnecessarily elongated conversations that will lead you nowhere. Do not pad a conversation out by overwhelming a co-worker with an abundance of information at one sitting. With everything else they need to worry about at the moment, they may not be able to cognitively absorb all of what you said anyway. Cut right to the chase, get to the point, and move on.

Adapt To Nonverbal Cues

There are too many people who are not adept at interpreting the meaning of nonverbal communication. Sometimes, our colleagues are not comfortable with expressing certain things through words. The next best thing is to make their bodies do the talking. If you are giving a presentation, and people look disinterested, looking away or rolling their eyes, would you deem it wise to cut the presentation short or continue without their undivided attention? It is not necessarily an insult to you, but rather a message that they have a lot to do, or they could be doing something more. If you are gonna take their time, you had better make sure it’s worth their while.

Instead, if you feel yourself going too fast, simply pause and gather your thoughts so that you can facilitate a productive discourse. The last thing you want to do at work is sound like a machine to others. Just speak like a normal human beings and get your thoughts out clearly.

Follow all these tips, and you will waste less time.
