Town, Madison Youth & Family Services: Summer Youth Employment Program

MADISON, CT —Madison Youth and Family Services is partnering with the town and local businesses to help some Madison teens overcome barriers to employment opportunities.

The Summer Youth Employment Program will match a teenager with a local employer who agrees to partner with the town. The town pays the wages and provides support to the participant through an orientation and ongoing contact.

A participant would be matched to a job and commit to working six weeks between July and August, between 15-20 hours per week.

What you need to know

• Be a Madison resident between 15-19 years old, enrolled in school and WANT TO WORK!
• Meet one of several possible eligibility criteria for an “employment barrier”, such as documented disability (special education designation or mental health diagnosis), limited family income (per program guidelines) and/or involvement in the state foster care system. Applicants will be verified for their eligibility and if accepted, will be considered for their abilities, strengths and interests to match to a participating work site for a specific job.
• Have the necessary parent/guardian support AND RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION to/from a worksite.
• Agree to follow the guidelines and expectations for the program and the worksite, including attending a mandatory program orientation and any meetings with program staff as necessary.
• Be able to commit to a consistent work schedule of over the course of the six weeks between July and August 2022

Program Overview

More applicants are anticipated than positions and the town cannot promise a job for every eligible applicant. All eligible applicants will be considered for available placements, and priority will be given to the best match to a particular job. Other factors such as availability, enthusiasm, and readiness will be weighed in the process.

Once matched, oriented and placed in a job, participants will be expected to fulfill all aspects of their job placement with supervision and direction provided by the work site. Wages will be paid by the town at the state minimum wage of $14 an hour. Participants are not eligible for unemployment compensation following the completion of the program.

The program is subject to possible cancellation for lack of participants, placements and/or loss of state funding.
